This post will be dedicated to give my thoughts about a photo we saw in class from an article 'Making the invisible, visible': Haunting pictures of America's most vulnerable people shot by photojournalists against poverty". This photography was shown by the professor at the beginning of class to revise the concept of context, text and subtext; but what he didn't expect was the interesting conversation this photo brought up to the class.
We were assigned to write down on a piece of paper everything what we saw on the photo and what it spoke to us. This photography caught everybody attention because all the first thoughts were pretty interesting and sort of judgmental thoughts such as the photo was taken in a third world country, family whom is in drugs or poverty situations, even the importance of the gender of the person in the picture. All this comments or point of view leaded us to an interesting and rich debate because everybody felt touched by the image and what the photography was speaking to us, and also it was a perfect way to revise context, text and subtext.
Text refers to all the details , the visible and tangible things we see a first sight, all the relevant information we catch from the photography and this is our bias of the photo such as they are two children, its a woman or man, its a third world condition life, there is hope, love, poverty and ascinamiento ( meaning everything happens in one room, poor living condition, lack of space to improve conditions). The context refers to the information which is not revealing a first sight, its the background of the text, the way how the unspeakable is taken place in the narrative of the photo, its what determinate the story behind what we see, influence our bias such as america poverty, not equality, daily mail article. The subtext is the message that the photo is given such as violence, bright and dark juxtaposition , life in poverty, heartless. This photo provides us a clear understanding about the differences between context, text and subtext because we could see clearly how those aspect play such as an important role in composition terms because that let us to create a story and make it readable.
I really like the photo because its such a revealing story from part of the country people don't see or are not aware of . it shows reality beyond our view and daily context. The fact it reflects the poverty in America makes me understand more the equality of society concept is taken or managed, i think is clever and shocking how a simple photography shows the unspeakable situation this country is dealing with, daily life and reality because this kind of situations happen and its something all countries deal with, its not about being a third world country or first world country what makes the differences, its how the equality of the power and the benefits are being distributed. This photography touched me a lot because reveal this kind of conditions other people have make me feel blessed and also understand how the materials things are trivial and fleeting. also I like when the real life is shown, when people notice about the outside of the bubble and make changes about it, the fact they are noticeable is a huge step for changing them because we need to be aware what is outside in order to make an improvement or an action about it.
